3 Reasons People Say NO to the 1770 Beginner Spearfishing Course and Retreat

😳I'm an absolute beginner with a pathetic breath-hold (insert other perceived limitation;)

Many people are worried that they might not be able to meet the requirements and will look foolish/inadequate in front of people. This is a normal response when you see people 8m down, looking comfortable and shooting a Coral Trout, you can possibly feel justified in feeling this way.

Here's the thing though:

90% of them didn't look like that on day 1.

You are looking at them on day 4 after intentional skill building, confidence boosting, carefully crafted activities that build you up to the opportunities that the Southern Great Barrier Reef is so reliable at providing.

Here is a list of REAL attributes that will set you up for success.

  • Can comfortably swim 100m unassisted
  • Can wear their mask, snorkel and fins swimming laps in a pool (no breath-hold just finning and swimming laps getting comfortable)
  • Have moderate (or better) level of physical fitness
  • Are teachable and leave your ego at the shore
  • Can willingly submit to being outside their comfort zone for brief periods in order to attain a new skill
  • Have no serious medical conditions

💸$2450 is expensive, not sure I'm ready to invest

This is a BIG investment and you are right, this might not be for you:

  • If you would like to reduce your learning time significantly, this retreat is for you
  • Want to meet 11 other like minded people similar to you, this retreat is for you
  • Consider learning safely with an expert team of no ego, frothy and professional instructors, this retreat is for you
  • Would like opportunities to shoot some great fish in a target rich environment (as a learner), this retreat is for you.

BUT don't just take my word for it, read what others have to say HERE

About this Beginner Spearfishing Retreat

These events are more than just a course. Participants, Instructors and Assistants all hang out together and often people make friends and dive buddies for life. Together we go on a structured journey designed to help you gradually acquire the skills, confidence and knowledge to begin spearfishing.

The course begins with introductions and theory, a meal and then progresses into the water on day 1. The Padi freediving course is delivered with 100% spearfishing in mind and therefore provides you with confidence in the water, good dive technique and an awareness of safety.

From there, we learn about spearguns, how to use them safely and competently and do a land based exercise followed by target practice in the water. We also learn species identification with a focus on what you are likely to encounter and especially what not to target (no take species).

Healthy spearfishing is always focused on sustainability. One breath, one shot, one fish. We show you how to shoot the fish, dispatch, bleed and gut the fish. We take this a step further and even get you involved in the filleting process, the cooking and we all love the eating part.

If you want to go on a unique learning experience with like minded people, this course might be for you.

FAQ

  • What happens if the weather or water visibility is not diveable? *we are partnering with Dive, Spear and Sport to facilitate these 1770 Retreats

Cancellation due to weather is our Skippers call and if they can't run, they can't run - but the time of year we run 1770 retreats is good for weather usually. We try to make any poor weather calls as early as we can BUT I recommend booking flights that can be refunded or shifted as weather is outside of our control.

  • What if I need to cancel my course last minute?

All deposits are non-refundable due to the careful planning, budgeting, and specialized personnel required for these trips. If you need to reschedule your trip, we require at least 30 days’ notice, and we can sometimes place you in a later trip. This notice period allows us the necessary time to reassign spots and keep costs reasonable for everyone.

  • What are the Padi Freediver Requirements?

90 seconds static breath hold. 25m dynamic.10m constant weight dive in the Ocean. Buddying and rescue techniques. Complete online Padi learning. Swim either 200m or 300m with a mask, snorkel, and fins on. Complete online Padi learning and quick review theory. If for whatever reason you don't pass the Padi Freediver component, you can still continue and learn the spearfishing. Our objective is to help you become safe, competent, confident and super frothy - performance is NOT a core focus however there are requirements to successfully complete the Padi Freediver Certification.

  • I can only hold my breath for 30 seconds, can I still do the course and enjoy it?

I'll let you in on a secret. MOST people are super nervous about this part of the course, it is 100% normal. The GOOD news is that we will teach you a whole lot about breathing, relaxation and listening to your body. Chances are HIGH that you are more capable than you know. Just know that nerves are normal and you have the potential to do this!

  • What gear will I need to bring?

There is full hire gear available onsite but you will need:

    • Mask and snorkel
    • Freediving or spearfishing fins
    • 2 piece Wetsuit (3mm or if you feel the cold a 5mm). I wear a 3mm bottom and 5mm top but Tom Sandstrom (Instructor) will wear a full 5mm suit.
    • Speargun, float and rigline
    • Weightbelt *weights provided and some weight belts available
    • Dive knife
    • Hooded towels are excellent but a beach towel works for changing and breathwork/stretching (laying on the ground)
    • Sunscreen
    • Big water bottle
  • I am already certified as a Freediver (either Padi or another agency), do I have to do it again and pay the same?

We can guarantee that we teach the freediving component with spearfishing 100% of the conversation. If you are already qualified, we can give you a merch pack (shirt and seafood cookbook 99 Spearo Recipes). We can also run you through your PADI Advanced Freediver (level 2) certification as part of this retreat instead. Just let us know when you book and we'll sort it out. contact shrek@noobspearo.com if you have further questions

  • I am a vegetarian/gluten free/other dietary requirement person, do you cater for me?

Yes, mostly! Some food is provided and we all share (students and instructors) in food prep, cooking, dishes and cleaning. You will be prompted for dietary requirements and we shop accordingly. We have had pescatarians and people with gluten and or dairy intolerance and made it work!

  • Is the local supermarket good and are the facilities in the backpackers ok for cooking?
Yes, the supermarket is fine - there are three close by and there is a big IGA in town as well that's the same size as a coles or woolworths. Coles also does daily deliveries if you want to order anything and have it delivered in.
The backpackers has two kitchens. They also have a BBQ available for use and can do the smoker or fire cooking too which we will likely use as a group with some of our own fish catches!
The other option for cooking is in the private kitchen in the Instructors Accommodation (house) next door to the Backpackers. Big, pretty modern and all ours.
  • How do I get to 1770?

If you are coming from Brisbane or can fly into Brisbane: Our instructor team take vehicles from Brisbane on the Thursday departing early morning. We will return from 1770 back to Brisbane on Monday aiming to be back in Brisbane by 1200

*happy to assist with travel arrangements just email shrek@noobspearo.com

  • Where do I/we stay?

The Backpackers @1770 have set us up a group booking code and the entire Instructor team is staying there also. We will be doing some group meals from there and walking to and from our accommodation to our vessel, teaching room and swimming pool. Hold off on booking accommodation until you have paid your deposit and we will send details. Accom starts at $39 per night.

Other options are available for accommodation that are more quiet and private if desired. We send out several recommendations once you are signed on.

  • Is spearfishing safe and is this beginner retreat safe?

Yes and Yes. Spearfishing has inherent risks involved. These risks are essential to understand and mitigate. We do our utmost to manage these as best we can and have a proven safety record. At Noob Spearo our priority is your safety and we manage risks with clear communication and practices that make what we do as safe as practicable. If you have specific concerns, email shrek@noobspearo.com

  • What is the course like?
