Once again Shrek and his Noob Spearo Team of Legends have delivered an amazing unforgettable trip this time to PNG’s East New Britain Province, a remote part of the world! This was my second trip organised by this crew so I had pretty high expectations which were once again exceeded. The underwater environment was just amazing and presented so many opportunities to secure a fish of a lifetime from iconic reef species to blue water pelagic’s. Thanks to Isaac, Tim, Ben and Dylan and my fellow frothers who came along for making it such a wonderful trip.

You will not find yourselves in better hands or have a better time. PNG 2026 was truly a trip of a lifetime.

I believe that at the end of our lives, when we look back, what we really have is a collection of our most worthy memories. You can choose to spend your money on a Coach purse, an Armani watch, or whatever expensive thing happens to catch your eye—something that a few years from now, neither you nor anyone around you will even remember, and that you certainly can’t take with you. Or you can spend it on a trip of a lifetime—meeting people of substance, exploring places you could never have imagined, and experiencing things so exciting that the memories you build will stay with you for the rest of your life.

The time my brother and I had was, without exaggeration, exactly that kind of experience.

Shrek is a gracious, selfless host and someone I now consider a friend. We will meet again.

I could write a short novel about the trip we just had, but instead I’ll save you the time and leave you with one thing:

Be a man or woman of action. Do yourself a favor and GO.

this course can be for anyone whos never speared to someone who has plenty of experience with dive depths between 5-20m providing for all skill levels. you will get opportunities at reef species and pelagics! youll have a great time learning off very experienced spearos and employ the techniques to become more efficient as a hunter and a diver

I just want to say a huge thank you to all of you! Before the trip, I knew it was going to be good, but I never imagined it would be this amazing.

Shrek, without your encouragement and all the help you gave me with my visa application, I might never have had the chance to join this incredible trip. Thank you for putting everything together and for always looking out for me throughout the trip.

Dylan, without your help with my visa, I simply wouldn’t have made it to PNG. And without your flasher and burley, I wouldn’t have had the opportunity to land my doggie — definitely one of the highlights of my life! Thank you as well for generously lending me your wetsuits.

Tim, thank you for all your detailed feedback and advice on my spearfishing techniques, and for lending me your wetsuit too! My son now proudly believes that I went diving with Tim McDonald — and he finally understands that you’re not the boss of McDonald’s! 😂

Ben, thank you for lending me your wetsuit and leading us that day, as well as taking amazing photos/videos for the group.

Thank you all for guiding and supporting me throughout the trip. I learned so much from each of you, not only about spearfishing, but also from your experience and generosity.

Most of all, thank you for making this trip such a special experience for me. I’ll remember the time we spent together in PNG for the rest of my life.

Experience and real world insights are very important in a sport like Spearfishing, which has various elements of risk involved. The emphasis on enjoying yourself but in a safe way makes it very practical and useful.   Really enjoyed spending time with Shrek and the team.  Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Had an unreal time with Noob Spearo. I came away from the trip with a heap more confidence in the water, better knowledge around diving and spearfishing, and a couple of awesome fish to show for it.

The whole experience was relaxed, safe and really well run. Everything was explained clearly without overcomplicating it, and you can tell there’s a genuine passion for helping people improve and enjoy the sport.

Easily one of the best things I’ve done since getting more seriously into spearfishing. The photos from the trip were unreal too. Would 100% recommend Noob Spearo to anyone wanting to learn, improve their skills or just have an epic day in the water.

 Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Decided to head down for the 1770/ Agnes retreat. Was an absolute surreal experience.

The motto is no ego full froth, and it’s exactly that. Diving with some of the best in the business that are more than willing to assist/ mentor you anyway they can.

The weekend was planned perfectly, each day is a full learning experience. Couldn’t speak more highly for the instructors and the enthusiasm they bring. To spear and dive on the reef with this crew was a true highlight!!

Course and Retreat FAQ

Do I need to know how to freedive before joining a beginner course?

No, you don’t need any prior freediving experience.
In our beginner retreats (Straddie and 1770), we teach freediving from the ground up. The PADI Freediver course is a core part of the experience and builds the foundation for everything else you’ll learn over the weekend.

What’s the difference between a spearfishing course and a retreat?

Our retreats are designed to be more than just a course.

You’ll still learn all the fundamentals of spearfishing and freediving, but the experience goes much further. We combine structured training with real in-water sessions, plus everything else we can fit into an extended weekend to help you actually start your spearfishing journey with confidence.

It’s also a social experience. You’ll be learning, diving, cooking and spending time with a group of like-minded people and instructors, which makes it a much more immersive and enjoyable way to learn.

What happens if the weather or water visibility is not diveable?

Retreat or Course Dependant: Some courses can still be completed and you will be able to come back and finish anything on a later course. Some courses we reschedule the event and provide refunds where necessary.

How does payment work? Do I need to pay in full upfront?

We don’t require full payment upfront.
To secure your spot, we take a deposit. The remaining balance is then invoiced and due around one month prior to the retreat.

What if I need to cancel my course last minute?

All deposits are non-refundable due to the fixed costs involved in facilitating courses, retreats and charters. If you need to reschedule your course, we require 30 days notice and then often we can place you in a later course.

Do you refund on bookings?

We do not provide refunds. If sufficient notice is provided you may be able to reschedule your course to a date that suits you. In the event of exceptional circumstances a refund is provided minus an administration fee of $100 that will be deducted from the refund.

What are the Padi Lvl 1 Freediver Requirements?

90 seconds static breath hold
25m dynamic
10m constant weight dive
Demonstration of buddy diving and rescue techniques
Complete online Padi learning
Swim either 200m or 300m with a mask, snorkel, and fins on.

What gear will I need to bring?

Mask and snorkel
Fins
Wetsuit or at least rashtop and boardies
Speargun, float and rigline
Weight belt and weights
Dive knife
Beach Towel
Water Bottle
Sunscreen

I am a vegetarian/gluten free/other dietary requirement person, do you cater for me?

Yes, mostly! Food is often provided and we all share (students and instructors) in food prep, cooking, dishes and cleaning. You will be prompted for dietary requirements and we shop accordingly. We have had pescatarians, Halal, gluten intolerant and or dairy intolerance and made it work!
