About NoOb spearo

G’day my name’s Isaac or ‘Shrek’ and I love freedive spearfishing. I grew up in New Zealand where I fell in love with the water and did just about everything in it including swimming, fishing, lifesaving and eventually Scuba Diving.
While completing my Master Scuba Diver Instructors Course I came to realize that freediving was what I really enjoyed, but it wasn’t until a few years later in Australia that I started freediving and spearfishing seriously. That’s when I learned just how hard it is. There’s the financial outlay of equipment, learning how to use the gear, then finding dive buddies and learning to hunt fish and that’s just to name a few of the challenges I faced.
That’s where the Noob Spearo was born. We’ve been helping people to get better at spearfishing ever since with the Noob Spearo Podcast, blog, community and books that give people actionable information to improve their spearfishing.
In 2021/2022, I started teaching people online and in-person how to spearfish in Brisbane, Australia. I am a certified Padi Freediving Instructor and love teaching frothers how to make the most of their innate ability to spearfish confidently and safely! I team up with legends to deliver epic, fun and safe spearfishing courses.

“Couldn’t recommend this course enough! I’d hit a bit of a wall with my spearfishing, wasn’t making much progress with bottom time and depth. Over the course of three days with Shrek and Keiren I was able to take some huge steps forward, picking up skills and knowledge that have made me a much better (and safer) spearo. These guys are gurus, they’ll give you the advice you need to improve your game in a really inclusive and fun environment. Was also a great opportunity to connect with other spearos. Met some absolute legends who I now dive with regularly!“

“I’ve been spearfishing part-time for years and recently took the Noob Spearo freediving/spearfishing course and thoroughly recommend it. The course is structured, informative, engaging, and of course actionable, just like the Noob Spearo podcast. Having Isaac (Shrek), the host of the podcast, as an instructor was a huge bonus. He’s well-connected and knowledgeable in the spearing/freediving sport, making him an invaluable resource. Kieren, the other instructor and gear guru, has grown up with a spearing lifestyle, brought years of high-level competition experience and shared amazing stories.
Together, they created a course that was inclusive for all levels, and the camaraderie they fostered made performance feel like an accelerated natural progression rather than a pressure to perform environment. The course covered all aspects of the spearing lifestyle, including the physical side, knowledge of the environment, safety, gear demonstrations and talks, freediving certification, hunting skills, conservation, culinary skills, and accommodated our Q&A. It truly packed years of knowledge gained by Shrek into a single weekend and brought everyone closer to the spearfishing community.
Overall, it was a fantastic experience, in a great location that I highly recommend. Thank you to the Noob Spearo team for an awesome weekend. Looking forward to the next one!“

“Such a great course! We spent the weekend on Stradbroke Island to complete our freediving level 1 course and to hone in on our spear fishing skills. Super friendly team whether you are beginner or advanced – there was a mix of abilities and everyone was taken care of.
Meals were really yum too! Shrek and Kieran are legends and I couldn’t recommend this spearfishing course enough“
