G’day, I’m Isaac — most people know me as Shrek.
I’m a lifelong water‑lover who turned a passion for freediving and spearfishing into a mission: helping everyday people become confident, safe, and skilled spearos.
I grew up in New Zealand doing anything I could in the water — swimming, fishing, lifesaving, and diving. During my Master Scuba Diver Instructor course, I realised my real love wasn’t scuba at all — it was freedive spearfishing. But starting out was tough. Figuring out the gear, learning safety the wrong way, finding buddies, finding fish, the hunt… it was a steep, expensive learning curve to figure it all out on my own.
That’s why I created the Noob Spearo project. Through our podcast, blog, and community, we’ve helped thousands of divers around the world skip years of trial and error and start spearfishing smarter.
Here in Australia, I teach in-person spearfishing certified PADI Freediving and Spearfishing Instructor. Together with a few legend instructors, we run hands‑on courses that are safe, fun, and guaranteed to level up your spearing — whether you’re starting out or chasing your next personal best.

“Couldn’t recommend this course enough! I’d hit a bit of a wall with my spearfishing, wasn’t making much progress with bottom time and depth. Over the course of three days with Shrek and Keiren I was able to take some huge steps forward, picking up skills and knowledge that have made me a much better (and safer) spearo. These guys are gurus, they’ll give you the advice you need to improve your game in a really inclusive and fun environment. Was also a great opportunity to connect with other spearos. I’ve been spearfishing part-time for years and recently completed the Noob Spearo freediving/spearfishing course — highly recommend it. The course was structured, engaging, and incredibly actionable, with Isaac (Shrek) bringing huge knowledge and experience, and Kieren adding deep spearing and gear expertise. It was inclusive for all levels, with great camaraderie and natural progression, and covered everything from safety and environment to gear, hunting skills, freediving certification and conservation. Overall, an awesome weekend in a great location and a course I fully recommend.
